Where SouthCoast Families Can Get Immediate Food Help

As uncertainty continues around the future of SNAP benefits, the United Way of Greater New Bedford is stepping up to support families who may suddenly find themselves without the assistance they rely on for food.

More People Are Turning to SouthCoast Food Programs

Michelle Hantman, President and CEO of the United Way of Greater New Bedford, said the need for food support in our area has already been growing. Even before talk of a government shutdown, this summer's Mobile Market program saw a 50 percent increase in attendance this season.

“Groceries are expensive, especially healthy foods,” Hantman explained. “People are already struggling. The cost of living is high for everyone.”

With that need expected to rise even further, United Way of Greater New Bedford and its partners have been preparing to expand services and support local food pantries that may experience higher demand.

SouthCoast Food Pantries Will Need Support

Hantman said the United Way is now raising money to help local food pantries quickly buy what they need. "One size does not fit all," she said. What each pantry requires can vary widely depending on the community it serves, so flexibility is key.

Hantman emphasized that the people who rely on SNAP are often working families, neighbors, and local employees.

“There is a stigma,” she said. “But many people who work full-time still need help. You don’t always know someone else’s situation.”

The United Way of Greater New Bedford website now features an updated list of local food programs, including food pantry schedules and locations. You can also call 2-1-1 anytime for confidential guidance.

Hantman encourages anyone needing help, or anyone wishing to support others, to reach out.

“We live in a caring community,” she said. “And now is the moment to take care of each other.”
