Acushnet Baker Shares Sourdough for Little to No Dough
Acushnet Mom Launches “Pay What You Can” Bread Program During Shutdown
As families across the SouthCoast navigate the challenges of the ongoing federal government shutdown, including the temporary pause of SNAP benefits, one Acushnet mother is stepping up in a remarkably personal way.
Meet the Corner House Bakery
Alicia Beer is the owner and baker behind The Corner House Bakery, located inside her home at 1 Austin Lane on the corner of two cul-de-sacs. Beer has quietly been making loaves of handmade sourdough for neighbors and friends for months, but as food insecurity has increased, she decided to expand in a meaningful way.

A Pay-What-You-Can Model for the Acushnet Community
Starting this Sunday, Beer will be offering fresh loaves on a “pay what you can” basis. No set price. No judgment. If someone can afford $10, great. If they only have $1, that’s fine too.
“All I want is for people to enjoy the bread,” she said. “I love making it. It’s my therapy. And if it helps someone feel less stressed about food this week, that makes it even more meaningful.”
This isn’t just any bread. Each sourdough loaf takes nearly 48 hours to create from mixing, resting and folding the dough by hand, to slow proofing and finally baking in her home oven. There’s no machine involved, just passion, patience and care.
A Dream That Might Grow
Beer hopes to eventually become fully licensed and expand her little bakery into something larger. But right now, she said, the mission is simple. “If someone needs bread, they can have bread," she said. "The community takes care of each other here.”
The home baked sourdough bread will be available starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday at The Corner House Bakery, 1 Austin Lane in Acushnet.
