After five straight weekends of rain, SouthCoast families are crossing their fingers for some sunshine this Father’s Day, even if it's just enough to fire up the grill or squeeze in a round of golf.

I found myself in the same boat as many others this week as I was trying to book a Father’s Day lunch with my dad and the family, but unsure whether to reserve outdoor seating or play it safe inside. Tired of dodging raindrops every weekend, I reached out to ABC6 Chief Meteorologist Kristina Shalhoup for the official outlook.

Turns out, my instincts weren’t far off.

“New Bedford has had FIVE straight weekends in a row with measurable rain. Yikes,” Shalhoup confirmed.

And yes, make that possibly six.

Shalhoup said Saturday is shaping up to be the wetter day of the weekend, with scattered showers and a few pockets of heavier rain. While not a total washout, she recommended having an indoor backup if your reservation is weather-dependent. Expect highs in the low 70s.

As for Sunday?

“It’s not a 10/10, but I’d give it a solid 6,” she said.

A few lingering showers could sneak in during the morning, but the trend looks to improve by the afternoon with decreasing clouds and a bit of sunshine later in the day. Temperatures will stay on the cooler side for mid-June, hovering around 70 inland and the upper 60s closer to the coast.

I have to hand it to her, Shalhoup knows her stuff.

Bottom line: It may not be picture-perfect patio weather, but it’s looking decent enough to still enjoy some time outdoors and get take in some fresh air.

“If you're wondering if the weather will be good enough to spend some time outdoors on Father's Day, just know that your friendly neighborhood meteorologist does, in fact, have a noon tee time with her dad, and no plans to move it," she said.

Honestly, that’s all the reassurance I needed.
