Thanksgiving is upon us, as is Giving Tuesday on December 3, and Christmas is right around the corner. It's a time when many people and corporations think about making donations to their favorite charity or non-profit organization.

While you certainly have the freedom to make your own choices about financial gifts, give some consideration to the SouthCoast Community Foundation.

President and CEO Melanie Edwards-Tavares joined Townsquare Sunday to make a case for your support.

"Think about museums, non-profit agencies, the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, all of these places rely on philanthropy in order to exist," Edwards-Tavares said. "It's important that we have a vibrant and thriving philanthropic sector."

The foundation's coverage area amounts to 41 communities in Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth and Dukes counties.

Edwards-Tavares said when someone makes a donation to the Community Foundation, they have a lot of choice as to where that money will go.

"The first thing we will ask is what's important to you, what are the things that move you?" she said. "Then we will ask if you want to invest this money, or have it go into use right now? Do you want it to be used for the arts, or youth development, or education?"

Since 1995, the SouthCoast Community Foundation has distributed more than $50 million in grants to humanitarian, educational and cultural organizations in the region.

If you would like to make a donation to the SouthCoast Community Foundation, Edwards-Tavares said you should simply pick up the phone.

"Everything starts with a conversation," she said. "There are a lot of donors in this region who care about what's happening here. There's always a conversation to be had."
