A neighborhood landmark in New Bedford's South End is now history.  The former United Social Club, near Ben Rose Field, was demolished this week.

During the 50's and 60's the building was a gathering place for members of the city's Cape Verdean community.

However, the building was damaged by fire in 2010, and had been vacant for years.

John "Buddy" Andrade of the Old Bedford Village Development Corp., says the structure was an important part of the south-central neighborhood....

Attempts made to save the building over the years all failed.  Andrade says he knew the building was headed for demolition, but didn't know when it would happen.

He added, he was surprized the community was never notified.
