Somerset Woman ‘Devastated’ After Losing Late Grandmother’s Sewing Machine

If there's one thing I'm confident about, it's our communities' drive to help one another here on the SouthCoast.

The other day, I came across an interesting Facebook post about a woman looking for a lost sewing machine. It wasn't until I dove deeper into the story that I realized that this wasn't just any old sewing machine.

This one had priceless value.

The machine belonged to Gloria Ferreira, the grandmother of 28-year-old Sarah McCarthy of Somerset. After Ferreira passed away recently, the machine was put out on the curb by accident for anyone to pick up.

It's been a month since someone scooped up the machine near Pleasant Street in Somerset and the family has been on the hunt to find it ever since.

As a child, McCarthy was taught everything there was to know about sewing and it all began with Ferreira's sewing machine.

“Vavo taught me how to sew on her original Singer (sewing machine) before her house burned down," McCarthy said. "She bought me a mini version of one when I was little and would help alter my prom dresses."

Keep in mind that the cabinet needed one of the hinges replaced, so the door would sag if opened. The door was one of the distinguishing features of the antique sewing machine.

One of McCarthy's close friends, Jennifer Leigh, has been helping with the search and took to Facebook in hopes that someone would be able to help.

"It's a sentimental thing, she's devastated," Leigh said. "It was outside for anyone to pick up, but the family wasn’t aware she (McCarthy) wanted it and desperately wants to get it back. I’m hoping we can find it so she still has a little piece of her grandmother she can keep with her."
