For years, that rhythmic series of thumps traveling between Fall River and Somerset has been one of those oddly specific SouthCoast curiosities. You feel it, you hear it, and at some point, you’ve probably wondered, how many are there, actually?

Well, one Rochester woman decided to stop wondering and start counting.

It all began during a routine drive. Becky Opozda was leaving work and heading to the gym in Somerset. She takes this trip multiple times a week and these bumps catch her attention every time. This time, instead of letting it fade into the background, she leaned into it.

That’s right. According to Opozda’s unofficial (but deeply appreciated) research, there are 58 bumps from one side to the other. Whether you’re heading into Fall River or cruising toward Somerset, the count remains the same

Now, is it a little quirky to dedicate time to counting bridge bumps? Sure, but it answers a question many of us have had since we were kids.

Opozda even double-checked her work, recording her findings more than once to make sure she nailed it.

So next time you’re crossing the Braga Bridge, go ahead and count along. Just don’t be surprised if you lose track around 23 and have to start over.
