SOMERSET — Two Somerset residents have been displaced after a house fire destroyed their Gertrude Street home last night.

Somerset Fire Chief Jamison Barros said no injuries were reported in the fire, which likely started with a Christmas tree in the house.

Firefighters were called out to a structure fire at 6:44 p.m. Thursday, arriving to find the house already fully ablaze and the windows blown out, according to Barros.

The crews battled the blaze from outside the home, bringing it under control before going inside to search for and extinguish remaining hot spots.

But officials said in a statement that the house is likely a total loss.

One resident was inside the building when it caught fire, and was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Dighton's Fire Department assisted on the scene, and Swansea Fire Department helped with station coverage during the incident.
All units were cleared by 10:18 p.m. Thursday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

SouthCoast Experiences to Consider Gifting This Holiday Season

I propose that this holiday season, we spend a little extra time thinking about what experiences our loved ones would appreciate. Now is the time to consider how they enjoy spending their time and ask yourself how your gift can help them with their interests and hobbies. If the kids in your life already have a room full of toys, consider memories filled with love, fun, and excitement to be the better option this holiday season. Bonus points if it's something that allows you and your loved one to spend time together.
