NEW BEDFORD - The officer shot and killed Thursday in Barnstable was a New Bedford native.

Yarmouth Police officer Sean Gannon, 32, was shot while officers were serving an arrest warrant against Tom Latanowich, 29, of Somerville. Gannon was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis where he was pronounced dead. Gannon's K-9 partner was injured during the standoff with the suspect.

Gannon, the son of Patrick and Denise Gannon, was born and raised in New Bedford. He attended St. Mary's All Saints Catholic School in New Bedford. Gannon graduated from Bishop Stang Catholic School in 2003 where he was very active in tennis, cross-country, debate team, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and was a student ambassador. Gannon's parents and siblings, Timothy and Martha, also graduated from Bishop Stang.

Gannon joined the Yarmouth Police Department in 2010. He is survived by his parents, brother and sister, and his wife, Dara.

Latanowich, a career criminal with 111 prior charges on his record, was arrested after an hour-long standoff with police. He is being arraigned Friday in Barnstable District Court on a charge of murder.
