WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has been placed on a security alert after a shooting on a street outside.

An armed man is in custody after being shot by a Secret Service agent near the White House. The shooting happened at a security station outside the White House complex. The suspect was rushed to a hospital under heavy police guard. The White House was immediately locked down after gunfire was heard. There is a huge law enforcement presence at the site of the shooting, including the Secret Service, FBI and Park Police.

President Obama is not at the White House this afternoon. He is golfing at Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryland. Vice President Joe Biden is reported to be in the White House complex and secure.
