SHARE Foundation’s Walk and Roll Returns to Westport Point Next Weekend

The SHARE Foundation is inviting everyone to participate in Walk and Roll 2026 in Westport next weekend.

It's a fundraising event for SHARE, which provides technology free of charge to help people with serious disabilities communicate better with the world around them.

Foundation Executive Director Jack Dresser and Board Member Dr. Wendy Stern stopped by Townsquare Sunday to promote Walk and Roll 2026 and announce some exciting news about the organization itself.

45 Years of Empowering Local Residents Through Assistive Technology

The SHARE (Society for Human Advancement through Rehabilitation Engineering) Foundation has been in business for 45 years, and recently reached a milestone, serving 4,000 clients.

"Our very first client in 1981 is still a client of ours because she needs help as technology evolves," Dresser said. "Our clients live in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island."

A Doctor’s Personal Connection to SHARE’s Life-Changing Mission

Dr. Stern treated patients with speech disorders during her time with Southcoast Health and often referred patients to the SHARE Foundation. Stern's husband lives with Parkinson's Disease, and when he developed issues with communication, she turned to the SHARE Foundation for help. She has been a board member for two years.

"Even as a physician, I did not understand how compromised people are by disability, and how profoundly it affects themselves, but all their family, neighbors and friends as well," she said. "Anything we can do to make our neighbors' lives easier is a worthy cause."

Event Details, Route Information, and How to Register

You can help by taking part in Walk and Roll 2026 on Saturday, September 26 starting at Westport Point United Methodist Church, located at 1912 Main Street in Westport. Registration is at 9 a.m., with the event kicking off at 10 a.m. The route is 1.5 miles long.

You can register at thesharefoundation.org or sign up at the event. Participants who raise $50 or more will receive a "Walk and Roll" t-shirt. Everyone can enjoy coffee and donuts at the start, and pizza when the event wraps up.

"Westport Point is really a magical place," Dresser said. "You are walking down Main Road surrounded by historic homes that go to the very tip of the point, where docks and an oyster farm are located. It's a beautiful walk."
