School Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin is announcing plans to improve security at New Bedford High School.

Durkin says the city has received $6.5 million from the Mass. School Building Authority to address security and technology issues. Up first says Supt. Durkin is the installation of more cameras.....

The school will now have more than 200 security cameras on line, compared to the sixty cameras there now.

Other funds will be used to improve wireless internet access throughout the building and provide smart boards and other state of the art technology.

School officials are also forming two work groups to draw up recommendations within the next two months for other security improvements. Durkin says New Bedford High has never had an after-hours intrusion alarm system.

She says police will increase overnight patrols in that area for the time being while the School Committee decides on the best security option. .
