GNB Voc-Tech Offers New Bedford High Students Trade Training After Dark
It's a long-overdue collaboration, and I'm not talking about the pairing of Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars on "Die With a Smile," currently topping Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and New Bedford High School have joined forces for an After Dark Program offering NBHS students instruction in carpentry and plumbing after regular school hours.
It's exciting news for those frustrated by NBHS's limited ability to provide adequate vocational training and the limited slots available at GNB Voc-Tech.

We've suddenly realized that college isn't for everyone and that plenty of youngsters are eager to learn the trades and make a living with their hands.
It has also occurred to us that we have a significant shortage of skilled tradespeople.
In a joint press release, the schools say, "This collaboration provides NBHS students with enhanced opportunities for hands-on technical education while maintaining their academic studies."
The statement says, "Beginning in 11th grade, participating NBHS students will attend their academic classes during the regular school day and transition to GNB Voc-Tech Monday through Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in Carpentry or Plumbing."
The After Dark Program requires a two-year commitment, starting in the 11th grade. Interested students should contact their guidance counselors for more information.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell tells WBSM, "Anyone who's needed a carpenter or a plumber to fix a problem will tell you it's a high-demand trade."
"Collaborations like the After Dark Program between New Bedford High School and GNB Voc-Tech enhance the vocational and technical opportunities available to NBHS students, and open more doors to these in-demand careers," Mitchell said.
