FAIRHAVEN — A team of rescuers are attempting to save a whale that’s stranded on a beach at West Island in Fairhaven.

In a post to Facebook, Operations Manager at the West Island Weather Station ML Baron says the whale was discovered at Hoppy’s Landing at approximately 8:00 a.m. by a recreational fisherman who had stumbled upon the animal.

“The Fairhaven Harbormaster, Police and Animal Control rushed to the scene to figure out the almost impossible task to coordinate a rescue of the beached mammal which weighs up to or over one-ton,” said Baron.

“Marine Rescue Task Force members were rushing to the scene from The Cape as of 930AM. The species appeared to be a young minke whale that was still alive but barely moving its horizontal tail fin. “

Baron also posted a video he took of the scene to Youtube.

We will update this story as soon as more developments come in.
