For the first time in nine years, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series returns to Boston at the Institute of Contemporary Art on June 4. Self-proclaimed as the “world’s oldest extreme sport,” the 2022 World Series kick-off will be an incredible display of high-flying acrobatics.

What is Cliff Diving?

“Free-falling from up to 27m combined with awe-inducing acrobatics -- that’s the essence of cliff diving,” said Red Bull’s official website. Twelve men and 12 women compete at each stop of the tour, earning championship points along the way. At the end of each season, a champion is crowned, both men and women, and they are awarded the “coveted King Kahekili trophies.”

According to the organization, cliff diving began in Hawaii, when King Kahekili, a Hawaiian chief, leaped from the cliffs of Kaunolo in the 1700s.

Cliff Diving Today

Since 2009, The Word Series has attracted thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies all over the world, combing acrobatic free-falling with Olympic-style diving.

And these athletes jump off a lot more than just cliffs.

“Athletes launch from pure rocks, historical bridges, iconic buildings, or beside waterfalls,” said Red Bull.

Boston's Diving Sight

Spectators will gather in Boston’s Seaport for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2022 kick-off, where spectators will watch high-flying daredevils dive into the Boston Harbor from atop the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Event Information

Tickets are complimentary, but due to a limited capacity, they are disappearing quickly. All spectators will be required to have a ticket upon entry.

The competition can be held in wet or dry conditions, but if the wind speed reaches or exceeds 31 mph, possible scenarios will require a delayed start, a break or a cancellation.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is ready to bring excitement to Boston Harbor and reach new heights for the 2022 season.
