According to one City Councilor, the New Bedford High School Robtics Class has lost its head instructor and could possibly lose its Federal funding at the end of this school year.

Ward Six Councilor Joe Lopes says he's heard parental concern about the current state of the program.

He says there are rumors the US Navy will be pulling its support and funding, and the program won't return in September.

Lopes wants to make sure this prestigious program remains at the high school.

"Ideally I hope the School Committee and the Superintendent work to rectify this problem, because it truly was a wonderful program" says the Councilor from Ward Six.

Lopes is requesting the School Department and Supt. Dr. Pia Durkin will address these questions within the next 30 days.

He adds a robotics event was held at the high school earlier this year, and the New Bedford High team didn't even take part in the competition.

The program has been funded by the United State Navy and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and has offered scholarships and career opportunities to students with an interest in robotics and engineering.
