Pope Francis is in the United States. The Pope's plane was greeted by loud cheers from groups of invited students.

A red carpet was rolled out before the Pontiff emerged from his plane for an official welcome from President Obama.

The presidential entourage included First Lady Michelle Obama, the Obama's two daughters, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill.

The Pontiff also got a personal greeting from a small delegation of students.

As the Pope's plane taxied on the runway, the American flag and the Vatican flag were displayed outside the cockpit windows.

A number of Catholic dignitaries were also on hand for the arrival.

After the arrival, the Pope did not get into a large limousine. He climbed into the back of an Italian-made Fiat and headed toward Washington, DC.

It is the first time Francis has set foot on American soil. Over the next several days, the Pope has a packed schedule of events in DC, New York City and Philadelphia. (Metro Networks Inc.)
