PLYMOUTH (WBSM) — A fire completely destroyed a Plymouth mobile home Monday morning, displacing its residents and sending one to the hospital.

According to Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley, the department responded at about 9:08 a.m. on May 5 to a reported structure fire at 35 Indian Trail within the Plymouth Mobile Estates park.

Crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from a single-story mobile home. They also learned that the two occupants who were home at the time of the fire had been alerted to it by their smoke detectors and were able to safely escape the blaze.

Firefighters got the fire under control within 30 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene for several hours “to conduct extensive overhaul operations,” according to Foley. No firefighters were injured.

One of the residents of the mobile home was later transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth for evaluation.

The home itself was deemed a total loss and the residents were displaced. They are receiving assistance from Plymouth Emergency Management and the American Red Cross.

Foley said preliminary investigation indicates that the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, but its cause remains under investigation.

"Thanks to working smoke detectors, the residents were alerted quickly and able to escape to safety before the fire spread," Chief Foley said.

"This is a powerful reminder to have working smoke detectors in your home, because they save lives," Foley said. "I also want to commend our crews who did a tremendous job quickly attacking the fire and preventing it from spreading to any nearby properties."
