We’re about to let you in on one of Plymouth, Massachusetts’ best-kept secrets. It’s a place where you can escape from the everyday, relax, and sip some delicious wines that go beyond the norm. Wine doesn't just have to be about grapes, after all.

Plymouth Bay Winery is located right on the waterfront, with a sprawling front deck that overlooks Plymouth Bay and is just a stone’s throw from the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock. Unlike other wineries, though, Plymouth Bay isn’t just about the grapes. Their fruit wines feature a variety of seasonal tastes that utilize other fruits such as cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, plums, apricots and more.

The real secret here, though, is the food. While most people think of wineries for tastings and light snack pairings, Plymouth Bay Winery has some menu items that are worth the trip even if you don’t plan on tasting a single sip during your visit.

Plymouth Bay Winery also operates Plymouth Bay Gourmet, a line of wine-based jellies and sauces, as well as balsamics and olive oils. You get to experience many of these in the foods prepared at the winery, as well as some of their partner companies such as Raye’s Mustard and Caramel Kitchen caramel sauces.

Must-Try Flatbreads and Gourmet Bites

While you can try menu items such as a charcuterie board or veggie board, cheese plate or hummus plate, or the Bay-zel or Bay Knots pretzel options, the absolute must-try at Plymouth Bay Winery is the Wicked Figged Up Flatbread.

This flatbread features PBG’s Wicked Figged Up Jam, rosemary oil and mozzarella cheese. While it sounds simple, the taste is anything but – you have the sweetness of the jam combined with the richness of the rosemary and with a melted mozzarella that will allow you to put this dish up against any pizza in Plymouth.

Decadent Dessert Board

On my most recent visit to Plymouth Bay Winery, though, I was surprised to find out they’re now offering a dessert board. I had tried the wine-based sorbets and slushies that proprietor and winemaker Michael Carr was making over the summer – which are still available, even as the temperatures have cooled outside – but I had no idea they were offering this dessert board, so naturally I had to order one.

It features a waffle topped with PBG’s Blue Cinn jelly, whipped cream and caramel, along with sliced apples, two beignets, two truffles and caramel and chocolate dipping sauces. It was quite decadent and is certainly enough for two people to share, but you won’t want to, so order one for everyone in your group.

Wine Tastings

If you do plan on sampling some wines during your visit, you can either order it by the glass ($10 for wine, $12 for sangria), or go for a tasting. You can do a five-wine tasting for $15, or for $20, try 10 wines. Plus you get to take home an etched commemorative glass.

One of my favorites is Cranberry Bay. I like to add a twist of lime to it, something we call a “Plymouth Rocktail,” or “The Better Cape Codder.” Whether you prefer white, red or a blush, there are plenty of options – and if you do want a true grape wine, try the Widow’s Walk for a white, or the Colonial Red.

Fruit Wines Made Right on Site

Carr makes the wines right at Plymouth Bay Winery, and you can see through the glass doors into the room where all the magic happens. Plus, you can take home bottles of all your favorites, most for right around $20 a bottle or less.

Beverages for Those Who Are Sober

Want a different kind of pick-me-up besides a nice glass of wine? Plymouth Bay Winery offers pour-over coffee from George Howell Coffee, available both in-house and to take home. There are also mocktails available as well.

Close to Home

You might not realize it, but the Plymouth waterfront is only a 30-to-45-minute drive or so from most spots on the SouthCoast. You can take back roads like Route 18, Route 44 and Route 58 to experience a leisurely drive on a nice fall day, peeping the leaves as you pass by cranberry bogs and ponds on your way to historic downtown Plymouth.
