The Park Board has given unanimous approval to a New Bedford Police Union plan to sponsor carnival rides at Buttonwood Park next month.

Union President Hank Turgeon tells WBSM News, the union stepped up after the Whaling City Festival announced this week it had cancelled the festival for this year.

Turgeon says its important to give families and kids something to do in the summer....

The carnival will be held from July 11th thru the 13th. It will run from 12-to-9 on Friday and Saturday, and 12-to-7 on Sunday.

Turgeon says the event will have plenty of security, and will be much smaller than the Whaling City Festival.
