NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford police officer assisting with a funeral procession was struck by a vehicle while on a motorcycle this morning.

Officer Injured While Assisting Funeral Procession

The New Bedford Police Union posted on its Facebook page that the officer “suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital.”

Investigation Into Crash Remains Ongoing

“Out of respect for the officer’s privacy, and the continued ongoing investigation into the matter, neither the officer’s name nor the other party involved’s name will be released at this time,” the union posted.

Vehicle Operator Also Injured, Cited

New Bedford Police said the operator of the vehicle that struck the officer was also transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The operator was issued a citation for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
