Rare Orca Whale Encounter Caught on Camera Off the Coast of Cape Cod
A group of fishermen experienced a rare sighting on Monday while fishing off the coast of Nantucket. The captain was able to snap a picture just in time as a giant Orca whale breached the surface of the water and waved hello, offering up an experience the fishermen will never forget.
New England Fishmongers is a fish market in Kittery, Maine. The fishermen embark on trips out into the Gulf of Maine and beyond for the freshest catches to bring back to their market.
Captain Asher was aboard the Finlander 2 with his crew. They will be fishing out on the Cape for the summer, and while they were scalloping about 40 miles south of Nantucket, they spotted the giant killer whale.
“It was the first time he ever saw an Orca in this area,” said Andrea Pais, an employee of the fish market. “He was close enough to get some really nice shots. Everyone is really excited about it.”
“It’s not something you see every day while out scalloping,” said New England Fishmongers on Facebook.
The owner of the fish market, Captain Tim, has been fishing for over 20 years, and he had never seen anything like this before.
And it looks like Captain Asher wasn’t the only one to get a good look at this killer whale.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservatory shared a video online from another fisherman, who was only a few feet from the whale as it seemingly followed their boat.
It was certainly an exciting day out at sea on Monday. I would not be surprised if this isn’t the last sighting of this giant whale, so keep your eyes peeled on the shoreline.
