I have this recurring nightmare that I desperately need to use the bathroom, but there is not a single restroom to be found. It’s like my subconscious is Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars and says, “Best I can do is a toilet in the middle of the classroom, Kase. Sorry.” And in my moment of desperation, I have no other choice but to use the said toilet in the middle of the classroom, or sidewalk, or some other public place with hundreds of eyes staring at me. I feel exposed, vulnerable, uncomfortable, and ashamed. I always wake up feeling anxious about the vivid dream and it plagues my waking hours.

So, you can imagine the horror on my face when I came across a post on Facebook about a condo in Boston that has an incredibly unconventional feature; an open-concept bathroom.

No doors. No walls. There are even a few windows. And it was done on purpose. The Jamaica Plain condo was renovated recently and someone actually decided that this was a good idea. That we should forego any form of privacy during a very private moment on the toilet or in the shower.

And let's not forget the fact that not only will people be able to see you use the bathroom, but they can probably smell you too. There are no doors to protect the nostrils from any offending scents and it will be glaringly obvious who the offender is.

Apparently, this is an upcoming trend in the last couple of years according to a 2019 article from Elle Décor.

"Gone are the days where you hide behind a wall or door when getting ready for work or a big night out,” designer Becky Shea said. “It's all about the open concept. The use of steel or privacy glass as a barrier is important, but ultimately, showering and getting ready in the open air is awesome. I see a lot of this happening in the residential interiors world."

In defense of Elle Décor, I believe this idea was meant for bathrooms that are included in a master bedroom suite, providing some sense of privacy from the rest of the house. Not the main living space, where anyone in the home can bear witness to your business.

And to top off what I consider the most absurd vision for a bathroom that I have ever seen, the condo is currently listed at $899,000. I’m sure there are positive qualities about this piece of real estate, but I would not pay a single penny to almost literally be living out my nightmare every single day. A potential owner would have to have an extremely open mind; more open than the concept for this bathroom.
