A fire early Monday morning at 104-106 hemlock street has sent two people to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger tells WBSM News, 9-1-1 calls started coming in just before 5am. Fire crews responded and reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the building.

Kruger says firefighters received a report of a person trapped on the second floor and entered the building. he said the tenant was located on the second floor and carried out of the structure.

That person was transported to St. Luke's Hospital with serious injuries, according to the Chief.

A second person was found on the third floor. That person was rescued and transported to St. Luke's suffering from smoke inhalation.

The chief says a total of eight adults and four children were displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation .
