Fire officials responded after an oil spill was reported in New Bedford Harbor Sunday morning.

New Bedford District Fire Chief James Fortin says the spill was reported around 11 a.m. Fortin says that although a rainbow sheen was spotted the spill appears to be fairly minor.

"It doesn't appear to be any threat to anything else," says Fortin "that happens alot, you get there it looks big, it looks bad, and then it breaks up on its own."

However, containment barriers were put in place at least for Monday and it's unknown when they will be removed.

"That's at the discretion of our Marine Safety Officer," says Fortin "he'll be heading out there at some point."

Fortin says that are unable to determine what caused the spill at this time.

"It was very difficult to find out who caused it," says Fortin "we could not locate a source of it, just a general area, it's possible that boat could have left."
