Animal control officials are asking for the public's help in finding the owner of an abandoned and malnourished dog.

The French mastiff was found in Acushnet last Thursday, rooting through a resident's garbage. Mattapoisett Animal Control officer Kathy Massey was called to the scene to assess the animal and possibly identify the owner who may be criminally charged if found.

With no such luck, Massey says the severely underweight dog is staying with a foster family.

Massey estimates the dog had not been fed for about a month, and is 100 pounds underweight. She adds the dog is trained, and assumes there was an owner.

If anybody has any information, they can call Massey at 508-400-8910.

The Acushnet Animal Gift Fund has received donations for food and medical expenses for the found French mastiff.
