Southcoast Health officials are celebrating the completion of a $13.5 million renovation to the maternity center at St. Lukes Hospital.

Hospital officials and political leaders cut the ribbon for the new state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit, which features 19 private post-partum rooms, two c-section rooms, and rooms that cater to families.

Where did the ideas come from? Southcoast President Keith Hovan told WBSM News, some of the ideas came from patients. "In the case of maternity services, we asked our patients what works and what didn't work," said Hovan. "We had moms and their partners figure out how to design this," he said.

The renovations at the St. Luke's maternity center are part of a series of improvements at all three Southcoast Hospitals. A new cardiac care unit is up and running at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, and expanded emergency room care is being offered at Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
