Firefighters in North Attleboro rescued a fisherman who fell through the ice on Falls Pond Thursday afternoon.

According to Fire Chief Christopher Coleman, firefighters responded to the pond near Mohawk Drive at about 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Coleman said firefighters dressed in ice rescue suits took a sled out onto the pond and retrieved the man, bringing him to safety within five minutes. He was then taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

"A job well done to our firefighters who put their training to use to quickly aid a person in need of help," Chief Coleman said. "Even on the coldest days, it is hard to truly be able to tell how thick ice is. For that reason, we advise residents to stay off the ice in order to avoid potentially dangerous situations like this."

In a release, Coleman also reminded residents that they should assume all ice is unsafe for activities such as skating or ice fishing.

“As a policy, the North Attleboro Fire Department does not certify whether any bodies of water are safe to use for recreational purposes,” the release said. “The department advises residents to stay off the ice and that all ice should be considered unsafe.”
