A new bar has emerged in downtown New Bedford, and it might be the city's smallest.

Tucked under Rose Alley Alehouse, Subrosa offers a unique and intimate drinking experience.

Subrosa — Latin for “Under the Rose” — lives up to its name both in location and spirit. Historically, Romans hung roses from the ceilings of banquet halls, symbolizing that conversations held under their influence would remain confidential. At Subrosa, you can sip on finely crafted cocktails and share secrets in a chic, relaxed atmosphere.

General Manager Craig Dale and his team have masterminded this cozy haven, creating a distinct, calming vibe that sets Subrosa apart from its upstairs pub counterpart. The bar officially opened on June 6 and features tiki-inspired decor with barstools that comfortably seat a dozen patrons, making it the perfect escape from crowds.

A bar had been in place in the Rose Alley basement for several years but had largely gone unused until Subrosa.

The cocktail menu at Subrosa is unique and approachable, featuring drinks that cater to everyone without being overly complicated. Here are some highlights:

  • Boardwalk Betty: A refreshing blend of Deep Eddy Grapefruit, St-Germain, lemon juice, jalapeno slices, and Sprite.
  • Pineapple Princess: A straightforward yet delightful mix of Deep Eddy Infused Pineapple.
  • 007: A sophisticated trio of Hendrick's, Ketel One and Lillet Blanc.
  • Thai Me Up: A spicy, exotic mix of ginger-infused gin, lemon and Thai chili honey.
  • Ginger Grant: A tropical concoction of 1888 Coconut, ginger syrup and lime.
  • We Jammin': A bourbon-based delight with Plum Islands Jam, lemon and bitters.
  • Southern Gal: Mezcal paired with lavender simple syrup, lime, egg white and lavender bitters.
  • NB Confidential: A bold blend of mezcal, Aperol, lime and watermelon pepper syrup.
  • Secret Society: An adventurous mix of lemongrass rye, coco cream, pineapple, lime and ube.
  • Espresso Martini: A perfect blend of cold brew, Havana Clasico, Dolce Nero, and vanilla brown sugar simple syrup.
