New Bedford Woman Charged With Hitting Police Cruiser

A New Bedford woman is facing charges of driving under the influence after she allegedly rear ended a police cruiser.

East Providence Police tell ABC6 that at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday they were in the process of clearing the scene of another accident on I-195 when a vehicle, driven by 34-year-old Veronica Areiras, rear ended the cruiser, lifting it off the road.

A police officer was taken to Miriam Hospital where he was treated and released for injuries sustained in the crash.

Areiras also sustained injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

She is scheduled to appear in court on January 7th.
