The City of New Bedford is being recognized by the White House for promoting physical activity and healthy eating.

According to a press release, New Bedford is one of 58 communities to earn "Gold Medal Status" in five key areas, including working with daycare centers to boost nutrition and physical activity, and encouraging public school students to walk or ride their bikes to school.

Kim Ferreira of Mass in Motion - New Bedford says her program have worked with a number of partners, encouraging healthy eating and exercise.

"It's been amazing to see all of these partners really come together and collectively want changes for all residents, from little kids up to adults," said Ferreira.

Ferreira will attend a ceremony with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Wednesday. Mayor Jon Mitchell praised Ferreira for her leadership, and said her programs are helping New Bedford children find their way to a healthy future.
