New Bedford Teen Finds Kidney Match After Months-Long Search

I’ve come to believe there are far more good people in this world than we think.

After months of waiting, prayers, and community support, 19-year-old Michael Blechar-Malencon of New Bedford has finally found his kidney donor.

Michael, who was diagnosed earlier this year with end-stage renal failure and stage five chronic kidney disease, had been on transplant lists in both Rhode Island and Boston while enduring nine-hour daily dialysis sessions from home. His story spread across the SouthCoast after a public appeal for a living donor – and one selfless stranger answered that call.

A Stranger’s Selfless Gift

According to Michael’s mother Amanda DaSilva, a New Bedford DCF worker (who we'll leave anonymous to protect her privacy) saw the article about Michael back on April 5. Believing at first that the story might involve a child she worked with, she clicked the headline, only to discover a young man she had never met. Still, she felt compelled to act.

That same night, she filled out the application to become a living kidney donor.

Faith and Gratitude Lead the Way

Exactly five months later, she received the news that she was a perfect match.

“She tells me she feels like God put her here for this purpose,” DaSilva said. “She is my miracle. I have prayed every day for this, and now we have a surgery date of October 20. I’m beyond grateful, ecstatic, and terrified at the same time, but so very blessed.”
