New Bedford Police Arrest Armed 14-Year-Old in Connection With Shooting
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police detectives placed a 14-year-old shooting suspect under arrest this week and seized a firearm that was in his possession.
According to police, the incident took place on November 12, when detectives located a juvenile they say was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred in early September. In that incident, which happened on Studley Street, a round was fired into the floor.
Detectives were able to take the juvenile into custody on Thursday without incident.
Detectives assigned to the Major Crimes Division were assisted by Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, which police described as “a team that concentrates its efforts on wanted people with a propensity for violence.”
Police said that while placing him under arrest, he was found to have a Glock 17 handgun loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, and was fitted with a magazine capable of holding up to 34 rounds.
“It’s unsettling that such a dangerous weapon was found in the hands of such a young offender,” Police Chief Paul Oliveira said. “I hope that this seizure has prevented a future tragedy and that this arrest can be a turning point in the life of this young man. He is clearly in need of intervention.”
