A New Bedford teacher is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a nine year old student at the DeValles School. The incident happened on April 8th.

According to Detective Capt. Steve Vicente, the female teacher grabbed the back of the boy's hoodie as the student was heading to the bathroom.  She also allegedly grabbed the boy's face and yelled at him.  Vicente says the teacher had told the student to go to a classroom, but he ignored her.

According to a police report, a classroom teacher later noticed red marks on the boy's neck, and reported it to the school principal.

Supt. Dr. Pia Durkin says the teacher has since been placed on administrative leave while school officials conduct an investigation.

Captain Vicente said the matter will probably end up before a Clerk-Magistrate in New Bedford District Court.
