Enjoy the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra Free of Charge

I did something recently that is entirely out of character for me. I went to the symphony – on a Friday afternoon. I've seen symphony orchestras before, but this was a different experience.

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is a jewel, underappreciated by many who think because it is local, it must stink.

It doesn't. The NBSO, under the direction of Music Director Yaniv Dinur, is something pretty special.

Born in Jerusalem, Maestro Dinur, an accomplished pianist, made his concerto debut with the Milwaukee Symphony in 2019. Dinur began studying the piano at the age of six.

A biography says Dinur "studied conducting in Israel and holds a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance."

Dinur made his conducting debut at the age of 19 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and has since conducted orchestras around the world.

The New Bedford Symphony made Dinur its Music Director in 2017. In 2023, the NBSO extended his contract through the 2028-29 season.

The New Bedford Symphony usually performs its concerts at the Zeiterion Theater. While the "Z" is being renovated, the NBSO's concerts are at the Bronspiegel Auditorium at New Bedford High School.

The Friday afternoon before each Saturday night classical concert, the public is invited to watch a free open rehearsal from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Bronspiegel Auditorium. Seating is general admission, and no tickets or reservations are required.

Dinur is personable and enjoys engaging with the audience during concert performances and rehearsals. Watching the open rehearsal, I learned about the music and how an orchestra works. It was quite an experience. It's perfect for seniors.
