Alice also said, "School's out forever," but it seems ol' Alice fibbed that time, because summer is almost over and all the little kiddos on the SouthCoast will march back to class before they know what hit them.

Back-to-school shopping is in high gear and many stores have already begun rolling out the Halloween pumpkins. How long before Walmart starts peddling Christmas trees?

Once upon a time, New Bedford's Feast of the Blessed Sacrament was at the end of August, an agonizing signal that the summer season was collapsing. Then Jerry Lewis would come on TV and weep on Labor Day Monday.

Summer was over for sure at that point. The following day was the first day of school. Rats!

These days. the Feast is in early August, Jerry Lewis has passed on and schools open before Labor Day.

In case you have not been eagerly anticipating the resumption of classes, here is a reminder of when you or your darling rug rats are due to report.

The New Bedford School Department says only students in Grades 9 and 12 at New Bedford High School report on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. All students Grades 1-12 report on Thursday, August 29.

Pre-K and K students report on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

The 2024-2025 school calendar is out including holidays and vacations. It lists June 20, 2025 as the last day of school, assuming Snowmageddon doesn't occur. There are some modifications for students attending the Parker School of which parents might want to take.
