NEW BEDFORD - Police have arrested a New Bedford man on charges of assault and battery, disturbing the peace, and pulling a false fire alarm following an early Monday morning incident.

The incident took place at the Regency Towers at 800 Pleasant Street at 3:48 a.m. Monday when police responded to a report of someone kicking an apartment door in the complex.

When police arrived, the fire alarm was sounding and lights were flashing. Tenants in the building had gathered in the lobby after hearing the alarm.

Police investigation revealed that Michael Mendes, 23, of 280 Acushnet Avenue, had kicked an apartment door at the Regency Towers and punched a tenant. Mendes told police he pulled the fire alarm.

The fire department responded to turn off the alarm.

Mendes was arrested at 4:21 a.m.
