NEW BEDFORD — Members of the New Bedford Police Narcotics Unit arrested two men Monday on drug charges as part of an investigation into street-level narcotics sales in the city's South End.

Police observed a suspected drug transaction between two men in the area of Ruth and Roosevelt Streets. One of the men then left the area in a vehicle, while the other remained in the area.

Police stopped the vehicle, driven by 47-year-old Matthew Lewis, no known address, and located heroin in his possession.

Police then returned to the Ruth and Roosevelt Street area and arrested the other male, 57-year-old Peter Lebon of 109 David Street, Apartment 1E in New Bedford, after he was found with heroin in his possession.

Lewis was arrested on charges of possession of heroin and conspiracy to violate drug laws. Lebon was arrested on charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and conspiracy to violate drug laws.
