New Bedford’s PJ’s Fine Foods Brings Flavor to Your Table
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A new business in New Bedford is catering to your taste buds with sauces, condiments and seasonings to spice up your food.
PJ's Fine Foods is a mother-son collaboration between Pat Kellogg and Jared Friedman. Making dipping sauces was a normal thing for their household.
After years of creating their signature sauces for friends, they decided in 2022 to take the leap into a business, putting their delicious sauces on the shelves for everyone to enjoy.
From Small Beginnings
The business started in Dartmouth, where the Grange Kitchen generously opened their space for Kellogg and Friedman to learn the ins and outs of production skills before eventually establishing their own space in New Bedford.
Friedman lives in Brooklyn and has been commuting to New Bedford for the past year to help with production and the hands-on aspect of the business.
Although the commute is demanding, he said it's allowed them to find raw ingredients in New York City that can be hard to find in New Bedford.
With almost two years under their belt, PJ's Kitchen continues to expand each day.
Currently, PJ's Fine Foods operates out of the former Southeast Bar at 114 Cove Street. This space, once a hub for social gatherings, has since been transformed into a small kitchen and production area, allowing them to kick out over 1,000 jars of homemade sauces a day.
"It's been a blessing we've managed to expand some sales and get out to more places because we can now make more products," Friedman said. "The city has been really generous and super helpful in every aspect. The business community has also been super supportive.
Spice Up Your Favorite Foods
The sauces come in a variety of flavors, from mild to spicy. Supreme Party Dip Mix and Pepper Jelly were the first two products by the duo. Crazy Uncle Red's Hot Pepper are for those who want an extra-spicy kick.
Their latest creation, Sunstreak, offers a blend of garlic, chiles, and sunflower seeds. Friedman describes it as "a little bit spicy and a little bit creamy."
All products are vegan and are free from added preservatives or sugars.
You can pair the sauces with different foods like french fries, a chicken or turkey sandwich, or even use them for a next-level grilled cheese.
As their business grows, the duo hopes to one day partner with farms and source more natural homegrown products for their customers.
You can find their sauces on the shelves of small shops throughout the SouthCoast, including Coastal Provisions in New Bedford, Lees in Westport, Fieldstone Market in Marion, and various other locations throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
