Barstool Sports CEO and pizza aficionado Dave Portnoy has once again made his way to the SouthCoast, this time stopping by a beloved New Bedford staple: Pa Raffa’s.

Releasing his review on Thursday, October 24 at around 6:30 p.m., Portnoy took a slice from the North End’s classic pizzeria and gave it a respectable score of 7.1.

Portnoy, who is a fan of old-school pizza shops, immediately admired the cash-only policy, calling it a "good sign of good pizza."

As he opened the box, he was taken by the classic appearance of the pie and the old-school vibe of the local mom-and-pop establishment.

"This is like a thinny-thin from Pa Raffa’s," Portnoy remarked, noting a slight “flop flop” in the structure of the pizza slice, referencing its flexibility and undercarriage.

While he enjoyed the flavors, he did mention that the pizza could use "a little more crunch" for his personal taste.

Despite the minor critique, he acknowledged that it was a solid pizza, leading to a score of 7.1.

This review is just the latest in Portnoy's string of SouthCoast pizza joints. Earlier in October, he stopped by Ray’s in New Bedford, where he gave a positive review of its thin and crunchy crust, along with The Dipper Cafe on Purchase Street.

Additionally, he praised Central Café in Middleboro, where he gave a 7.9 score and even gave a shoutout to his encounter with the Middleboro Cobras, who were celebrating their championship at the time. Portnoy additionally visited Stoney's Pub in Middleboro, and he also made a visit to Taunton.

For local pizza lovers, Portnoy’s return to New Bedford truly allowed Pa Raffa’s to stand proud as yet another solid stop on the One Bite review map.

The Best of South Shore Bar Pizza

There's pizza, and then there's South Shore Bar Pizza. Birthed in Brockton (and to this writer, perfected in Randolph – Lynwood Café is the true G.O.A.T.), it must meet certain qualifications to be considered "SSBP," which include: it's a 10-inch pie; it has a thin, cracker-like crust with minimal "flop;" the cheese is a blend that features more cheddar than mozzarella; and bonus points if you take it home between two carboard-type plates wrapped in flat brown paper bag. They also usually come with "laced" or "burnt" edges (terminology depends on where you are ordering), which is when the sauce and cheese are extended all the way to the edge of the pan, creating a crispy, flavorful coating to the crust. We reached out to the hugely popular South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club Facebook group to ask the experts to share the best of the best (in no particular order).
