NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man with an "extensive arrest history" according to police has been arrested after he led officers on a short chase in a stolen car early this morning.

Dennis Rose, 36, of Union Street was found in a red Toyota that had been reported stolen on Christmas day.

The vehicle was also involved in an incident in Dartmouth in which it fled at high speed towards New Bedford, according to police.

Police said officers responded to Penniman Street and Summer Street just before 5 a.m. for a report of a man trying to break into cars.

When the officers tried to talk to Rose, he fled, nearly striking one officer, according to police.

He ended up crashing into a passing car on County Street.

It is unclear if the occupants of the car were injured in the crash.

After a short foot chase to Clark Street, Rose was arrested and charged with multiple motor vehicle violations, assault with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, trespassing, leaving the scene of property damage, and carrying certain weapons.

He was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police said Rose has convictions for a slew of other offenses including armed robbery, firearm possession, and dealing drugs.

He was last convicted in November 2019 for breaking into a car.
