BOSTON (WBSM) — A Mexican national who was unlawfully residing in New Bedford faces up to a decade in prison and then deportation after pleading guilty to illegally reentering the United States after he was originally deported.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, 38, pleaded guilty on June 24 to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien.

Motor Vehicle Arrest Put Lorenzo-Guatemala on the Immigration Radar

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Lorenzo-Guatemala was first deported from the United States on June 4, 2019, but then unlawfully reentered the country some time after that.

“Immigration officials became aware of Lorenzo-Guatemala’s unlawful presence in the United States following his arrest on July 2, 2024 for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

He was arrested and charged by criminal complaint on the immigration violation in May 2025.

Lorenzo-Guatemala Faces Prison Time, Deportation

Lorenzo-Guatemala could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. He would then be subject to deportation after completion of his sentence.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other law enforcement partners have arrested 370 “alien offenders” during an “enhanced operation” in Massachusetts, including a man in New Bedford, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
