The former site of a New Bedford institution will soon have a new occupant that is the culmination of two local women's lifelong dream to open their own restaurant.

Krave Restaurant is "going to give new life to a local landmark," said Boramy Green, who along with Kerrie Gomes is the co-owner of New Bedford's newest home for bona fide Asian fusion cuisine.

These enterprising local women are rescuing the iconic Chuck's China Inn on Acushnet Avenue with a re-awakening that dovetails with the new beginnings they see all over the city.

"New Bedford is up and coming again, and we're going to be a part of that turn for the better," Gomes said. She moved away for a few years, only to return with a new appreciation for the place she grew up in. "Just look at all the redevelopment going on and happening places coming on the scene, like Cisco Brewery. Krave is going to be part of that rising spirit."

Both of these dynamos have always held true to the dream of one day owning their own restaurant. Gomes grew up flipping eggs onto her dad's famous Cape Verdean munchupa or cachupa at the Common Park Restaurant, located at the bottom of Common Park where the Lebanese Kitchen once stood, and then moving the popular eatery to near Sunbeam Bread as Pat Neve's Restaurant.

"At 14, I was working the grill, so I grew up in the restaurant business," she said.

In addition to opening Krave, both are gainfully employed outside of the restaurant business. Green owns the Polish Bar Nail Salon on Rockdale Avenue, and Gomes is a nationally-contracted "head hunter."

Both want to bring "authentic Asian fusion and sushi with seafood boils featuring extraordinary sauces like Cajun butter sauce, and so much more, that you to travel to Providence or Boston to enjoy," according to Gomes.

"We're both big foodies, and Kerrie and I love dealing with people, so we're going to make this happen," said Green.

Krave is set to open officially on September 4. There will be live entertainment and family-style dinner specialties will be offered. Krave promises to fulfill your dining experience unlike any other restaurant on the SouthCoast. Combine that with the owners' optimism and warmth, and this area has itself a new restaurant destination that you'll soon be Krave-ing.
