NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford High School’s Class of 2024 will have to wait an extra day to receive their diplomas.

New Bedford Public Schools announced today that the commencement ceremony, which was planned for Thursday, June 6, has been postponed due to the expected heavy rain.

The ceremony will now take place on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at Paul Walsh Field.

It is expected that 700 students will be walking across the field to collect their diplomas. The school already held commencement exercises for its evening extension school students on Tuesday night.

Last month, UMass Dartmouth still held its commencement ceremony during heavy rain, despite criticism from those attending that it should have been postponed. Keynote speaker Rob Hale surprised graduates that day by giving them each $1000 in cash.
