
New Bedford Launches Free Tech Classes for Beginners
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — If you’re reading this article right now, chances are you are at least familiar enough with a computer or a smartphone to be able to access information – but do you know how to make that information work for you?
Perhaps you have an older adult in your life who has not quite mastered technology, or just wishes they could be more computer literate and internet savvy?
Mayor Jon Mitchell announced Tuesday that the City of New Bedford will be offering three free technology classes over the next 10 months, “giving beginners the chance to build essential computer skills, get comfortable with tablets and the internet, and learn how to use Microsoft Office,” according to a release.
What Technology Classes Will Be Taught?
Computer Basics, Computer Intermediate and Introduction to Microsoft Office classes will be offered. They “are geared toward seniors, but are available to anyone who feels they need some help learning essential computer skills,” the release stated.
When and Where Will the Classes Be Held?
The two-hour classes will be held once a week on Saturdays for eight weeks. The classes will be held at the Council on Aging Administrative Office, located at 181 Hillman Street, Building 9.
There will be four sessions offered. The summer session will run from July 26 to September 13, the fall session from September 27 to November 15, the winter session from December 6 to January 31, 2026, and the spring session will be from February 14 to April 4, 2026.
Computer Basics and Introduction to Microsoft Office are offered all four sessions; Computer Intermediate will be offered in the fall and spring sessions.

Who Will Teach the Classes?
Classes will be taught by Jared Mello, whom the City release described as “a technology professional who leads projects for a global government contractor.”
“He holds a college degree in Information Technology and Business from UMass Lowell, and takes pride in supporting and educating seniors to help them get comfortable with today’s technology,” according to the release.
Who Can Take the Free Classes?
New Bedford residents will be given preference, but the classes are open to anyone. You can sign up by calling the Council on Aging at (508) 991-6250.
Who Is Funding the Free Technology Classes?
The classes are funded through a $43,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech), “a state agency that supports business formation and growth in Massachusetts’ technology sector,” according to the City.
