New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge Shut Down Due to ‘Heat Impacts’
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced that the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge is currently shut down, and it is expected to remain closed for several hours.
According to MassDOT, “heat impacts” have forced the closure of the bridge. The current temperature in New Bedford at the time of this writing is 97 degrees. With high temperatures expected to continue into Wednesday, even if the bridge reopens, it is possible another shutdown could occur.
“Drivers traveling through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution,” MassDOT said.

However, motorists seeking to get into New Bedford from Fairhaven will have to use alternate routes such as Interstate 195 or Howland Road.
The bridge has had to close for heat-related issues in the past, as the metal components of the swing bridge swell in the heat and make the bridge unable to close.

Just about a year ago, the bridge was shut down after a power outage occurred as it was in the act of closing. It reopened after a backup generator was able to supply power to the bridge.
The bridge is due to be replaced with a vertical lift bridge. The project is expected to cost over $100 million and construction could begin in 2027.
