Hilarious Google Reviews of the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge
NEW BEDFORD — Winter on the SouthCoast may be cold and dreary, but one of the best parts is the New Bedford-Fairhaven bridge.
That's because in the off season — unlike the warmer months — the bridge doesn't open every hour.
But because of its advanced age (120 years and counting), every so often it just...doesn't work, as we saw this past weekend.
Construction on the New Bedford-Fairhaven bridge began at the end of the 19th century, and finished in 1903.
Since then it has been repaired or rehabilitated multiple times — and it shows.
Luckily the state is working on a new bridge design, and if all goes according to plan, construction could start in 2027.
Meanwhile getting stuck at the bridge is a time-honored SouthCoast tradition.
Most drivers caught at the red lights immediately turn around to try their luck on 195, but a few others (apparently) sit and fume...and write about the experience on the internet.
The bridge has an average of two and a half stars from 11 reviews on Google — and the write-ups are simultaneously funny, sad, and oh-so-relatable.
Most of the Google ratings are one star, but astonishingly, more than one person has given it a five-star rating — apparently out of either sarcasm or pity.
From a "perfectly adequate" "crown jewel" to "slow" and "ugly," people have said all sorts of things about our bridge.
Whether you love it or just love to hate it, you have to admit it's our favorite dysfunctional turn-of-the-last-century piece of infrastructure.
Here's what reviewers have to say about it. Reviews appear exactly as they did on Google.
