UPDATE: New Bedford Public Schools spokesperson Arthur Motta said the Ashley School will be open again tomorrow, Jan. 18.

"Eversource identified the issue was with an external transformer that serves the school, not the school’s heating system," Motta stated.

NEW BEDFORD —  New Bedford's Ashley Elementary School will be closed today, Tuesday, Jan. 17, as the school building does not have heat.

That's according to a message posted to Facebook by New Bedford Public Schools officials Tuesday morning.

No further details were provided on why the North End school's heating system is not working, or when officials expect school to be able to resume.

The closure comes just over a month and a half after Swift Elementary School closed for several days due to a problem with the boiler.

Students were eventually moved to nearby Normandin Middle School to resume classes during the issue last November.

Named after a 19th-century former New Bedford mayor and constructed in 1922, the Charles S. Ashley School building is now 100 years old.

It's located on Rochambeau Street and sits across Ashley Boulevard from Brooklawn Park.
