New Bedford School Classes to Resume Elsewhere Amid Boiler Issues
NEW BEDFORD — Classes at a New Bedford elementary school will resume at another location today after school was cancelled for three straight school days due to ongoing problem with the boiler.
Jireh Swift Elementary School students from grades 1 through 5 will be attending classes offsite at the nearby Normandin Middle School on Tuesday, according to New Bedford Public Schools spokesperson Arthur Motta.
The move comes after school was cancelled for two days last week before the Thanksgiving holiday break due to the boiler and again on Monday after a heating oil leak.
Motta said the Swift School remains closed as "crews ventilate a residual odor of heating oil due to a faulty fuel pump in the boiler room."
On Monday, school facilities crews worked with the city's fire department and other agencies, including health officials, to remove the oil leak from the school.
Swift teachers will take on their regular classes at Normandin, according to Motta.
Parents or guardians are advised to send any questions to their child's teachers by email or using Dojo.
Motta did not say if the students will have to make up the three missed days at the end of the school year.
Swift School is located in the North End at Lund's Corner, the intersection of Tarkiln Hill Road and Acushnet Avenue.
According to the school's website, Swift School was built in 1909 and was named after prominent local whaling industry merchant Jireh Swift.
