NEW BEDFORD — A dog has died in New Bedford after it was hit with gunfire in the second shooting incident to take place on Sunday.

New Bedford police confirmed that at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, West End units responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Chancery and Elm Streets.

Officers arrived to find that shots had been fired, resulting in property damage.

They also later discovered that a dog had been hit. The dog had to be euthanized afterwards due to its injuries, according to police.

Police said detectives are investigating.

The incident marks the second time shots were fired in New Bedford's West End on Sunday, after police also responded to a ShotSpotter activation at 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of County and Merrimac Streets.

In that incident, police said officers arrived to find evidence of gunfire.

Shortly afterwards, a suspect was found leaving the scene of a nearby car crash on foot.

Police said the suspect was stopped and found to have a firearm.

No injuries were reported in the first incident, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.

Sunday's gunshot activity comes just two days after an apparent shootout at the Dartmouth Mall parking lot on Friday night and a Weld Street New Bedford shooting that left one man dead early Friday morning.

It is unclear if the incidents are related.
